The 6th grade students will take the Math Benchmark Test 3 times this year; August, December, and May. Information about Fall Pictures and the Schoolwide Fundraiser will also be sent home soon! Bullying Prevention Program Kick-Off! Is Coming Soon!!!!! "Colts Against Bullying" or "C.A.B" Dear Parents and Students, Today we kicked off our Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, or OBPP for short. OBPP is the most researched and best-known bullying prevention prorgam available today. Develope by Dr. Dan Olweus of Norway, OBPP has over thirty-five years of research behind it and has been implemented throughout the world, in countries such as the United States, Canada, England, Mexico, Iceland, Germany, Sweden, and Croatia, in addition to Norway. As teachers, we know that even with our best efforts, a student may still experience bullying in classrooms, hallways, the lunchroom, and the playground or athletic fields. And bullying isn't limited to the school grounds; it exists at school bus stops, community parks, summer camps, neighborhoods, homes, cyberspace, and anywhere that young people gather. To stop bullying, it needs to be addresssed at all levels of a student's experience. Unlike a curriculum that only addresses bullying at the classroom level and for a limited amount of time, OBPP addresses bullying at the schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community levels. Accordingly, students will receive a consistent, reinforced message about bullying over an extended period of time and in a variety of settings. Because bullying has such wide-ranging effects, OBPP is designed for all students, not just those who are bullied or those who bully others. The goal of OBPP, and now OMS, is to change the norms around bullying and behavior and to restructure the school setting itself so that bullying is less likely to occur or be rewarded. The implementation of OBPP will be a long-term effort - not something that is completed in a year. Also, because of its comprehensive approach, OBPP is being implented across all grade levels here at OMS at the same time. Today was our Kick-off day for OBPP here at OMS! Some of the things we discussed with your child are as follows: 1. What is Bullying? (when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himslf or herself. We also discussed how intimidation, guilt, and flatter are used by some bullies as a form of "emotional control" .) 2. Earlier in the year, many students also took part in a survey to pinpoint the areas and ways bullying is taking place in our school. Students had the opportunity to see these results. One of these areas we are currently concerned about is the high percentage of students reporting "other" as the places they were being bullied. One of our goals over the next few weeks is to identify those "other" areas. Any assistance parents can communicate in this area is appreciated. Another important aspect of this program, which we will "kick-off" in the spring for upcoming 6th graders, is "Partnering With Parents". This important step in our program will add greatly to the efforts we are involved in to STAMP out Bullying. |
