Welcome to Ms. Duncan’s Grade Art Class! Dear Students and Parents, Welcome to the Art program at Ocoee Middle School! Seventh and sixth grade art meet every day for approximately an hour and a half for the first nine weeks of school. For the second nine weeks, your child will have Community Wellness with Mr. Sausville. Eighth grade art will meet once a day for forty five minutes for the first semester of school. In the time spent in Art, we will work hard to express our ideas through art making, learn about other artists, and increase our understanding of art through discussions. Students will learn new drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture skills, as well as much more! The projects students complete will be exciting and fun, with many focusing on the important issue of self identity. I expect my students to work to the best of their ability in a neat and disciplined manner. Creativity is our focus and I encourage my students to take artistic risks! The only REQUIRED art material that the students much have each and every day is a PENCIL! In addition, I ask you to look over the following list and bring in any (or all!) of the following optional supplies to be donated to the art room and shared by all. · A box of pencils to share (extras for the day you drop yours in the hallway!) · Disposable magazines that are school appropriate · Clean, empty, plastic containers (from deli meat, yogurt, margarine, etc.) · Old calendars and picture books · Ribbons, decorative papers, craft supplies you don’t use · Scraps of wood · Any junk you want to throw or give away that is cool enough to draw!!! J · Any hand sanitizer, tissues, or Clorox wipes are also appreciated Art Fee : The fee for this class is $5.00. This money is used to purchase all materials for art making from paper to clay. Art materials are expensive and without this fee we are very limited. Grading: At the end of the first six week , the students will receive a numerical grade. Grades will be based on roughly 3 or 4 in-depth class projects (each worth 100 points) as well as in-class activities, assessments on progress, worksheets, and class critiques. In addition, students will lose points if their work is messy or incomplete. “How you do your work is a portrait of yourself” ~Pablo Picasso Ms. Duncan’s Art Rules – THE KEY WORD IS RESPECT! 1) Respect Your Teacher No talking when I’m talking Follow my directions 2) Respect Each Other No putdowns, foul language (bad words!), bullying, or name calling 3) Respect All Artwork Treat your work & the work of others with care and kindness 4) Respect Our Classroom Clean up after yourself and then help others until the job is DONE! 5) Respect Yourself ALWAYS TRY YOUR BEST! School rules will also be enforced (for example, you must come to class on time and be in dress code!) Art class is meant to be a time for work and not socializing, and students who misbehave will be asked to give me back the time they wasted in the form of detentions. Restroom Use: Students may ask me to use the restroom ONLY after instruction and demonstration. During work time, students can ask to use the restroom. Acceptable restroom use will be short and will not become a habit. If a student abuses their restroom privilege, I will deny them the opportunity to leave my class during class time. Nurse Visits: If it is an emergency (ex: feeling faint, need to vomit, have severe pains) students should NOT be afraid to interrupt me and ask for a pass to the nurse! The nurs will then sign the student into the clinic. However, if the student has a problem they can tolerate, I ask them to please wait until after instruction and demonstration and then ask for a pass to the nurse. If a student abuses this privilege with routine use, I may deny them access to the nurse during my class. Clean-up Procedures: All students must help with their assigned clean up (this means helping neighbors clean as well!) Each table will be held accountable for the overall cleanliness of their space and students will not be dismissed from class until their space is clean. Make-Up Work Due to Absence: I follow the school policy for absences, so students should obtain missed assignments from me as soon as possible. In order to not become behind, students must work hard during class and stay on task. Most art projects cannot be worked on at home, however in cases of long term absence, I will work with students individually to create a realistic plan for supplemented work to be done outside of class. Discipline Procedures: 1st offense = Verbal warning 2nd offense = Write offs/Team notification 3rd offense = Detention and Parent notification 4th offense = Detention and Parent conference 5th offence = Office referral *Note – Students will be IMMEDIATELY referred to the Principal and/or removed for all serious offenses!!! WE ARE ALL ARTISTS and I encourage my students to look at the world through the eyes of an artist. Students must pay close attention to the world around them and the topics that interest them in order to develop meaningful ideas! Skills will improve with PRACTICE so I encourage students to not give up. I’m looking forward to an exciting, fun, and inspirational semester!!! Sincerely, Amanda Duncan You can reach me at
